Melissa’s silence answered me.
I opened my handbag and removed a copy of a financial statement.
“Your company received three transfers from the concealed account. The first was two hundred thousand dollars. The second was three hundred and ten thousand. The third was two hundred and thirty thousand.”
Melissa stared at the figures.
“I didn’t know,” she whispered.
“I don’t know what you knew,” I replied. “But I know the money was transferred to a company registered in your name.”
She looked at Victor as though she were seeing him for the first time.
He lowered his voice.
“Everything I did was to protect the business.”
“No,” I said. “You did it to protect yourself.”
He looked at my scarred arm.
For a moment, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he said, “You have to understand what would have happened if the insurance company had discovered the installation records. We could have lost everything. The restaurant. The house. Our future.”
