“Mommy!”
He ran toward me.
I caught him.
“How was school?”
“We made pictures!”
He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the refrigerator.
“Look!”
He had stuck a drawing on it.
It was a crooked picture of three people.
Me.
Him.
And Grandpa.
Above us was a giant yellow sun.
I smiled.
“Where’s Dad?”
Ben shrugged.
“He wasn’t here.”
There was no sadness in his voice.
Just fact.
I kissed the top of his head.
Then I opened the refrigerator.
Milk.
Eggs.
Chicken.
Fruit.
Cheese.
Yogurt.
And that cereal with the little stars.
I stood there for a moment.
I remembered that first morning.
The empty shelves.
The half bottle of milk.
The bruised apple.
My father’s question.
Why is your child hungry?
Back then, I thought the answer was that I had failed.
Now I knew better.
Sometimes an empty refrigerator isn’t proof that a mother failed.
Sometimes it’s proof that someone else has been taking everything she worked to provide.
