collapsed during a 12-mile march, and when the medic cut open my jacket,

We stood there laughing while the sun disappeared beyond the trees.

Fourteen months earlier, I had believed cancer had taken something from me that I would never get back.

My sister.

My certainty.

My old body.

My sense of control.

I had spent months trying to prove that none of it had changed me.

But the truth was simpler.

It had changed me.

And that wasn’t the same thing as destroying me.

I had scars.

I had fear.

I had questions that would probably never completely disappear.

But I also had a future.

A future I had almost been too afraid to claim.

I looked across the training field one last time.

Then I walked forward.

Not because I had something left to prove.

Because I had somewhere to go.

And for the first time in a very long time, I was ready to find out where.
