Bride’s Mother Told the Groom He ‘Wouldn’t Last a Year’ – Five Years Later, He Sent Her a Package on Their Anniversary

I stared at him.

For five years, I had thought he was simply a patient man who refused to fight with my mother.

Now I understood that his silence had been complicated.

Part of him had wanted to protect me.

Part of him had been ashamed to tell me that my mother had looked at him and decided he was unworthy.

And part of him had been trying, in his own quiet way, to prove that the life we were building together would not be defined by her judgment.

I took his hand in both of mine.

“I wish you’d told me.”

“I know.”

“I wish you’d trusted me enough to let me be angry with you, or with her, or with both of you if I needed to.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I studied his face.

“But I’m glad you didn’t let her change who you are.”

He looked surprised.
