Robert lowered his head.
“I meant we needed to spend the night at the care facility. There’s a small family waiting room, and I planned to stay there beside you while we waited for him to wake up. I said it terribly. And grabbing you was completely wrong. I’m sorry.”
Suddenly, my mother’s warning made sense.
She hadn’t been afraid Robert would hurt me.
She’d been terrified he would reveal the secret she’d hidden for twenty-seven years.
Still, I was furious about the way he’d frightened me.
But one question mattered more than anything else.

“Can we see my father tonight?”
Robert nodded.
We left immediately.
Two hours later, we arrived at the care facility.
A nurse guided us to Room 14.
Inside, a frail elderly man sat in a wheelchair beside the window.
When he saw me, his hands began trembling.
“Emily?” he whispered.
