“How does he know she’s dead?”
Silence.
Rainey’s eyes flicked just once toward Sutter.
“We received a report from the scene,” he said smoothly. “The vehicle was found at Harlan Bridge. Regrettably, the mother did not survive.”
Lauren let the words hang in the air.
“Harlan Bridge,” she repeated.
“Yes.”
“I never told anyone about a bridge.”
Dr. Brandt blinked.
Gail Whitman’s hand drifted toward the wall.
Josie whispered, so softly only Lauren could hear, “I only told you.”
“I know, baby.”
Rainey’s smile finally cracked.
It did not disappear.
It simply stopped reaching anywhere.
“Dr. Greiss, I would remind you that interfering with a federal custody order is a serious offense.”
“Of course,” Greiss said at once.
He turned on Lauren.
“Nurse Pierce, you will hand over the girl and the infant immediately. If you refuse, I will have you arrested for obstruction.”
“Dr. Greiss, you are about to hand two children to men who have not shown you a single true document.”
