Nobody heard her.
The lobby of Admiral Prescott Naval Medical Center was loud with laughter. Four doctors stood by the reception desk. One of them held up his phone and filmed.
“Look at this,” he said. “A stray walked in out of the storm. Someone call the county.”
The others laughed.
The little girl did not move.
She was about eight years old. Her red sweater was soaked through. Her blue dress dripped onto the polished marble. A faded cloth wrap held a baby against her back.
The baby was silent in a lobby that echoed.
That silence was wrong.
Nurse Lauren Pierce was crossing the floor at the end of a long night shift.
Her head was down. Her shoulders were curved. Her hands trembled slightly around a paper cup of cold coffee.
Eight months at Prescott Naval.
Everyone called her Quiet Lauren.
She took the worst shifts. She never argued. She never talked about where she came from.
