“Be My Mom, Take the Baby,” She Whispered After Doctors Ignored Her — Only the Nurse Got the Signal

Imani Brooks was already moving.

“You will do no such thing,” Greiss snapped.

Lauren walked toward the treatment hallway.

Slow, steady, baby against her heart.

Greiss stepped into her path.

“Stop.”

She stopped.

Her eyes lifted to his.

Brown, calm, flat.

Something old and cold looked out of them.

“Doctor,” she said quietly, “move.”

For one second, he did.

Then he caught himself and straightened.

His face flushed red.

“Security, escort Nurse Pierce and these children out of the building.”

Officer Hutchins did not move.

The two men in sunglasses did.

Door two banged open.

Lauren came through it with Eli in her arms and Josie at her hip.

The pediatric bay was small and bright.

Gail Whitman, the night charge nurse, looked up from a chart.

“Lauren, what have you got?”

“Five-month-old found cold and quiet. Get me a rectal thermometer, glucometer, pulse ox, and the infant warmer. Turn the room heat up. Now.”
