At the age of 13, she gave birth to a child, and 18 years later, on her daughter’s birthday, she received a letter from the hospital, after which the girl’s father confessed for the first time that he was hiding the truth

I refused.

I told him that you were a child, that you needed protection, and that money could not erase what you had endured.

He became angry. He threatened to make sure you were blamed for everything. He said his family had connections and that nobody would believe a girl your age if they decided to turn the story against her.

Emma stopped reading.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt around her.

She remembered those days.

She remembered adults asking questions while she sat in a chair with her feet unable to touch the floor. She remembered feeling as though every answer she gave could somehow make things worse.

She remembered her father standing between her and the people who wanted answers.

But she had never known anyone had threatened him.

She continued reading.

I kept a written note containing one of those threats and gave a copy to the investigator handling the case. I wanted to make sure that if anyone tried to change the story, there would be evidence of what had really happened.
