Margaret looked genuinely confused.
“Because I was trying to help.”
“You were trying to control me!”
Daniel stepped toward Vanessa.
“Vanessa, stop.”
She turned on him.
“No, Daniel. I’m done pretending.”
Then she looked at me.
“You think you’re better than me because you have money?”
I almost laughed.
“You’ve misunderstood everything.”
I took a breath.
“I never thought I was better than you.”
I looked at Margaret.
“I thought you were better than what you did to her.”
That silenced her.
For several seconds, there was nothing but the sound of water moving across the lake behind the ceremony arch.
Then Richard Caldwell spoke.
“Vanessa.”
She looked at him.
“Did you push her?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.”
“I told you she slipped.”
“I didn’t ask what you told me.”
His voice was colder now.
“Did you push her?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Yes.”
A murmur swept through the crowd.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father stared at him.
I said nothing.
I didn’t need to.
Richard looked at his daughter with an expression I couldn’t read.
“Why?”
Vanessa wiped her cheek.
“Because she wouldn’t stop.”
“Stop what?”
“Trying to make me feel small.”
