“Jenna,” he said quietly. “Wait.”
He picked up a large yellow envelope from the table. It had been sitting under the box. I hadn’t seen it.
He held it out to me.
“This is for you,” he said. “It’s a copy of everything. All the messages. I made two copies. One for you, one for my lawyer. And there’s a card in there, too. My lawyer’s name. She’s good. She said
she’d talk to you if you want.”
I took the envelope. My hands were shaking.
“You knew,” I said. “Three weeks. You knew for three weeks.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Tom looked at me for a long time.
“Because I needed to be sure,” he said. “I needed to read every page. I needed to talk to a lawyer. And because…” He stopped. He took a breath. “Because I knew if I told you in private, they’d get to you first. They’d tell you I was crazy. That I was jealous. That I made it up. Rachel’s
been telling people I’m too serious since the day we met. And your family, they’d believe her. They always believe her. That’s just Rachel. Right?”
