The house was quiet again.
I made myself a cup of tea and sat beside the window.
Samuel’s letter lay on the table beside me.
I picked it up and read the final paragraph.
You have spent your life standing beside me. You deserved a husband who could stand beside you when you were frightened, too.
I read the words twice.
Then I placed the letter down and looked at our wedding photograph.
“I wish you had told me the whole truth,” I whispered. “I wish we had faced it together.”
I waited, as though some part of me still expected an answer.
Of course, none came.
But for the first time, the silence did not frighten me.
I no longer needed to imagine that Samuel had been perfect.
I no longer needed to pretend that the secret had never existed.
And I no longer needed to carry the shame of a decision that had never truly been mine to make.
