“You bought it!” she shouted.
Michael placed a hand over his heart.
“I supported a local business.”
“You said you baked it!”
“I supported a local business with exceptional baking skills.”
Everyone burst out laughing.
I sat in the garden, watching my grandchildren chase one another across the grass.
The noise reminded me of the house Samuel and I had built together, when our children were small and the kitchen was never quiet.
For a moment, I wished he were there.
Then I realized that I did not miss the old days because I wanted to return to them.
I missed them because they had been part of a life I loved.
And that life had brought me here.
Michael sat beside me.
“How are you feeling?”
I smiled.
“Honestly?”
He raised an eyebrow.
“That would be a refreshing change.”
I tapped his arm.
“I am feeling better. Still tired, but better.”
