At 80, my belly had grown so large that the doctors were left in shock. After an ultrasound, one of the doctors suspected that I might be pregnant! But

She explained which symptoms were expected during recovery and which would require prompt medical attention. She also reviewed my follow-up plan and encouraged me to seek medical advice rather than ignore new or persistent symptoms.

Before I left, I asked her something that had been troubling me.

“Doctor, if I had returned to the clinic fourteen years ago, would this have been prevented?”

She paused.

“We cannot know that. The earlier finding needed follow-up, and you should have received the opportunity to understand it properly. But we cannot say whether the current mass was the same lesion or whether earlier care would have prevented its development.”

I appreciated that she did not offer false certainty.

I had spent enough years wondering what might have happened.

I did not need another person to make promises about a past no one could change.

What I needed was to make different choices now.
