At 80, my belly had grown so large that the doctors were left in shock. After an ultrasound, one of the doctors suspected that I might be pregnant! But

“Is there a problem?” I asked.

“We have identified a large fluid-filled structure. I need the radiologist to review the images.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means we need more information.”

She performed an additional examination through the vagina, explaining each step before beginning. I was uncomfortable, embarrassed, and increasingly frightened, but I wanted answers more than I wanted to escape the room.

When I returned to the waiting area, Michael stood immediately.

“What did they say?”

“That they need more information.”

He looked at the door behind me.

“That’s all?”

“That’s all.”

He sat beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he took my hand.

“Whatever it is, we’ll deal with it.”

I nodded, although I was not certain I believed him.

An hour later, Dr. Harris called us into her office.

She explained that the ultrasound showed a large cystic mass in my pelvis, most likely arising from my right ovary. It appeared to contain fluid, but the images could not establish whether it was benign or malignant.
