I looked down.
“He said you had a habit of putting your own happiness at the bottom of every list.”
I couldn’t speak.
Arthur reached into the box.
“There is one letter he specifically told me not to give you unless you came to Australia.”
My heart stopped.
“Why?”
“He said you’d understand when the time was right.”
He handed me the envelope.
My name was written across it.
Abigail.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My fingers hovered over the seal.
For twelve years, that letter had existed somewhere in the world.
And for twelve years, I had been living without knowing it existed.
I looked at Arthur.
“Why now?”
He smiled sadly.
“Because you’re finally here.”
I opened it.
The paper inside had been folded carefully.
I began reading.
“Abigail,
If you’re holding this, then you finally made it to Australia.”
I stopped.
I couldn’t see through the tears.
Arthur quietly stood and walked toward the kitchen.
He gave me privacy.
I continued.
“I know you will probably feel guilty for coming here without me.
Don’t.
You spent too many years feeling guilty about things that weren’t your fault.”
My hands shook.
“Don’t turn this trip into another thing you do for someone else.
Did you paint that painting?
Love your story. Feel the same way. Just wish I had money to travel too
