At 69, I Sold My House to Travel Around the World Despite My Children’s Protests – In Australia, a Man Invited Me to His Home for Coffee, but When I Walked Into His Living Room, I Froze

I saw the painting.

And everything stopped.

Arthur watched me carefully.

Then he said,

“I wondered how long it would take.”

“How long what would take?”

“For you to recognize it.”

I turned toward him.

“You knew I would?”

“I hoped.”

“Why?”

He walked toward the fireplace.

Then he looked at the painting.

“Because Robert told me you would.”

My heart began pounding.

“When?”

Arthur didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward a cabinet.

He opened the bottom drawer.

Then he removed a small wooden box.

He placed it on the coffee table.

“There’s something I’ve kept for twelve years.”

I stared at the box.

“What is it?”

“Something Robert asked me to protect.”

He opened it.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

Some were yellowed.

Some had faded stamps.

Some had dates written across the corners.

But every envelope carried the same handwriting.

Robert.

My hands began trembling.

“How long were you writing to each other?”

Arthur sat across from me.

“On and off for decades.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Arthur was quiet.

Then he said,

“He wasn’t hiding an affair.”

“I didn’t say he was.”

“You were thinking it.”

I looked away.

Maybe I was.

He continued.

“We met when we were young. Robert spent almost a year here in Australia before you met him.”

  1. Did you paint that painting?
Love your story. Feel the same way. Just wish I had money to travel too
