I remembered Aaron removing his shirt.
I remembered Helen’s face.

PART 43 — NATALIE
Natalie was sitting near the water.
She saw me.
Her eyes moved briefly toward my scar.
Then back to my face.
“You look beautiful, Mom.”
I smiled.
“Thank you.”
She stood.
Then removed her own cover-up.
No speech.
No dramatic apology.
We walked toward the water together.
PART 44 — AARON’S SCAR
Aaron was already near the dock.
His scar was visible.

“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re staring.”
“I’m your mother. Apparently I’m allowed.”
He laughed.
It was the first time I had casually called myself his mother without
the word feeling stolen from someone else.
PART 45 — ELAINE
I visited the graves of Aaron’s adoptive parents.
