“Perhaps. But next time, I’ll insist on knowing a little more about the man before I let him make my tea.”
Helen burst out laughing, and for the first time in months, I laughed with her.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
You think it’s over, Margaret? You have no idea who Daniel was working for.
I read it twice.
My smile disappeared.
For a long moment, I sat perfectly still.
Then I forwarded the message to the investigating officer and called my solicitor.
I would not investigate it alone. I would not let fear push me into a reckless decision.
But as I watched Helen close the garden gate, one thought settled into my mind.
Daniel had not acted entirely alone.
Someone else had helped him build the scheme, and someone else might still be afraid of what I knew.
I set my cup down and looked toward the house.
