Daniel was already dressed.
“Good morning, beautiful.”
“What time is it?”
“Almost ten.”
“Ten?”
He laughed softly.
“You needed the sleep.”
I stared at him.
“I never sleep until ten.”
“You do now.”
He kissed my cheek and left for work.
I sat there for several minutes, trying to remember whether I had dreamed something strange during the night.
Then I noticed my bedside glass was empty.
I was certain I hadn’t touched it.
The first real warning came on a Thursday evening.
Daniel was in the shower when I went downstairs to retrieve my glasses. As I approached the kitchen, I heard a small click.
The sound came from the cupboard beside the refrigerator.
I stepped into the doorway.
Daniel stood at the counter with his back to me.
In his right hand was my familiar blue mug.
In his left was a small amber bottle.
He tipped something into the tea.
