“I’m Daniel,” he said.
“Margaret.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Margaret.”
I looked at his thin arms and grinned.
“Thank you for your help. Although, judging by your appearance, I might have to rescue you if the wind gets stronger.”
He put a hand over his chest as if I had wounded him.
“Madam, I assure you that I am much stronger than I look.”
“Of course you are.”
“And I happen to be an excellent swimmer.”
“Now I know you’re lying.”
He laughed so hard that a couple sitting nearby turned to look at us.
I had not laughed like that with a stranger in years.
We spent the next two hours talking about ordinary things. Daniel told me that he had been staying at the resort for several days. He enjoyed walking along the beach early in the morning, reading old novels, and sitting in the shade with a cup of coffee.
