At 61, I Married My First Love—But On Our Wedding Night, What I Discovered Beneath Her Dress Brought Me to Tears

I placed a blanket over her and stood there looking at her for several minutes.

She looked peaceful.

I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life giving her more moments like that.

A week later, we were sitting in her garden, watching the sun sink behind the houses.

I had been rehearsing what I wanted to say for days, but when the moment arrived, my carefully prepared words vanished.

“Anna?”

She turned toward me.

“Yes?”

“What would you say if I told you I didn’t want our time together to end when the coffee cups were empty?”

She smiled.

“Then I’d say we should buy a larger coffee pot.”

I laughed, but my hands were shaking.

“I’m serious.”

Her smile slowly faded.

I took a breath.

“What if we got married?”

For several seconds, she stared at me as though she had not understood.

Then her eyes filled with tears.
