“Did I upset you?”
He didn’t answer.
“Please talk to me.”
Finally, he turned around.
“Sarah, sometimes I think you don’t understand how much this hurts me.”
I immediately felt guilty.
He sat on the edge of the bed and covered his face with his hands.
“What if we can never have children?” he whispered. “What if that’s our life?”
I sat beside him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders.
“We’ll find a way. We can see a doctor. We can get help.”
He shook his head.
“Just promise me you won’t blame me.”
I pulled back slightly.
“Why would I blame you?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
He made me repeat it several times before he finally relaxed.
At the time, I believed he was simply a frightened man struggling with the possibility of never becoming a father.
I didn’t realize that this conversation would become the beginning of something far more disturbing.
