Me.
I had been frightened.
I had refused to speak to anyone.
Until Richard picked me up.
According to his letter, I had wrapped my arms around his neck and refused to let go.
He had carried me around for nearly an hour.
Before he left, he had promised me something.
“You’re going to have a home someday.”
Then life took him elsewhere.
Years passed.
He never forgot me.
When I walked into his study decades later, he recognized my eyes.
He recognized my name.
And when I told him about the shelter, he knew.
I was the same little girl.
But Richard had understood something about me.
I would never accept charity.
So when he heard my landlord threatening to evict me, he didn’t simply offer to pay my rent.
He knew that would destroy my pride.
Instead, he offered me a job.
Then friendship.
Then a family.
And eventually, love.
The lawyer continued.
“Richard also knew that if he simply left you his estate, you would become a target for people who would say you married him for money.”
I lowered my head.
He continued.
“So the estate isn’t yours.”
I looked up.
“Then where is it going?”
