My eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t want you to marry me because I’m wealthy.”
He reached into his pocket.
“I want you to marry me because somewhere along the way, you became the person I look forward to seeing every morning.”
I stared at him.
“I’ve fallen in love with you.”
My first instinct was to say no.
Because I was afraid.
Afraid of what people would say.
Afraid of what Emily would think.
Afraid that maybe I was confusing gratitude with love.
But then I looked at Richard.
And for the first time, I realized I wasn’t looking at a wealthy old man.
I was looking at someone who had become part of our family.
“I need time,” I whispered.
Richard nodded.
“Take all the time you need.”
I didn’t give him an answer that day.
Or the next.
It took me weeks.
And when I finally said yes, it wasn’t because of his money.
