“WE FINALLY MADE IT”
Getting Grandpa into the stadium took longer than we expected.
He walked slowly with his cane, stopping several times to catch his breath.
But he never complained.
Not once.
Every few steps, he looked around.
He watched the supporters arriving.
He listened to the chants.
He smiled at children wearing the team’s colors.
And when the stadium finally came into view, he stopped completely.
For a moment, he simply stared.
“Look at that,” he whispered.
We eventually reached our section.
Our seats were exactly where I’d hoped they would be.
Close to the field.
Easy for Grandpa to access.
And with a perfect view.
He sat down carefully.
Then he took June’s photograph from his wallet.
Holding it toward the field, he smiled.
“We finally made it, sweetheart.”
I pretended to look toward the pitch.
But I had to blink away tears.
Grandpa thought he was taking me to a football match.
He didn’t realize he was giving me a memory I would carry for the rest of my life.
Unfortunately, we weren’t the only people who had noticed those seats.
