“YOU SAW THAT, JUNE!”
The match entered added time.
Nobody was sitting anymore.
The entire stadium was standing.
Grandpa held his scarf above his head.
Then our striker broke through the defense.
One pass.
One shot.
Goal.
The noise became overwhelming.
Grandpa actually jumped.
He laughed.
He cried.
He waved his scarf.
And then he shouted toward the sky.
“You saw that, June!”
I looked at him.
He was crying openly now.
So was I.
When the celebration finally quieted, Grandpa slowly sat down.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out Grandma’s photograph.
He touched it gently.
“We made it.”
Then he looked at Brandon.
The boy was still holding the captain’s armband.
Grandpa reached toward it.
Brandon hesitated.
Then he handed it over.
I thought Grandpa had finally decided to accept the gift.
But he had something else in mind.
