Another knock.
Then a woman’s voice.
“Mr. Samuel?”
Samuel looked at me.
“Stay here.”
He walked toward the door.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Elena Brooks. I’m an attorney.”
Samuel didn’t move.
“Who sent you?”
A pause.
“Ethan.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Samuel opened the door only a few inches.
A woman stood outside holding a leather folder.
She was in her forties, dressed professionally.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone,” she said. “I came because Ethan asked me to find Mara.”
Samuel’s face hardened.
“Where is he?”
“He’s in danger.”
I stepped forward.
“Let her in.”
Samuel looked at me.
“Mara—”
“If Ethan sent her, I need answers.”
He hesitated.
Then he opened the door.
Elena entered.
She looked at the baby.
Her expression softened.
“She’s beautiful.”
I said nothing.
Elena placed the folder on the table.
“Ethan asked me to give you this if he couldn’t come himself.”
I stared at it.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“He disappeared two days ago.”
My heart dropped.
“He disappeared?”
“He had been investigating his family’s past.”
Samuel sat down.
