Susan refused to disappear.
She arrived with groceries when I forgot to eat.
She invited me out for coffee when Iād spent too many days indoors.
And when I couldnāt bring myself to talk, she simply sat beside me in silence.
I believed she understood my grief better than anyone.
So when she suggested taking a weeklong vacation to the beach, I eventually agreed.
āYou need a change of scenery,ā she told me gently.
āJust the two of us. Like the old days.ā
For the first time in months, the thought of leaving home didnāt seem unbearable.
And at first, the trip was wonderful.
We spent our mornings walking along the shoreline, collecting seashells, and visiting little cafƩs overlooking the ocean.
At night, we stayed up talking about childhood memories.
Sometimes we laughed until our stomachs hurt.
Other times, we sat quietly watching the moonlight move across the water.
