âAnd after Robert died, you held me while I cried for him?â
She nodded.
âYou watched me grieve for a man you were secretly involved with?â
âIâm so sorry.â
I stood up.
âWhy are you telling me now?â
Susan hesitated.
âBecause Iâm getting married next month. My fiancĂ© knows everything, and he told me I needed to confess before our wedding.â
I couldnât believe it.
She wasnât confessing because she cared about my pain.
She was confessing because she wanted to begin her new marriage without guilt.
I picked up my phone and looked at our final beach photograph.
Then I deleted it.
âYou were right, Susan,â I whispered. âThat really was our last picture together.â
She reached for my hand, but I stepped away.
âPlease donât throw away forty-two years of friendship.â
I looked directly into her eyes.

âYou threw it away eleven years ago.â
