A Woman Cut Ahead of My Elderly Father at Airport Security and Called Him ‘Grandpa’ – Then Two Pilots Saw Him and Stopped
He looked sharply at me.
“You told Mom you worked in maintenance. You told me that. You told Claire that.”
“I did work around airplanes.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“Elaine.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“Two pilots took off their caps when they saw you. A security supervisor looked like he’d seen a ghost. One of these pilots knows you, and you’re wearing wings I’ve never seen.”
Dad picked up his cane. “We have a wedding to get to.”
Grant approached.
“Your gate is B17, correct?”
Dad nodded.
“We’ll walk with you.”
“That’s unnecessary.”
Grant smiled.
“I know.”
As we crossed the concourse, an older baggage employee noticed Dad.
He stopped, placed one hand over his heart, and nodded.
Dad nodded back.
My skin prickled.
“What did you do?” I whispered.
Grant heard me.
He touched the wings on his own uniform.
“Let’s just say I wouldn’t be wearing these if it weren’t for him.”
Dad shot him a warning look.
“Grant.”
Grant fell silent and flashed him an apologetic smile.
At B17, Dad lowered himself into a chair by the window.
I sat beside him.
“You owe me the truth.”
He rubbed his thumb over the handle of his cane.
