People had started looking at us.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Please don’t do this here.”
“Do what? Ask my husband why he’s sharing hotel coffee with my best friend?”
Megan covered her mouth.
Ryan’s face reddened.
“We made a mistake.”
I stared at him.
“A mistake?”
He nodded quickly.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen.”
“Then why are you still doing it?”
He looked away.
That was my answer.
I turned toward the elevator.
Ryan reached for my arm, but I stepped out of his reach.
“Don’t touch me.”
“Kylie, please.”
I looked at him one final time.
“You told me you were going to Chicago for work. You kissed me goodbye in our kitchen. You promised our son you’d call him. And while I was rushing to the hospital because my mother was sick, you were here with her.”
His eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
