Mom was awake when I arrived.
She looked pale but comfortable, and the doctor explained that her dizziness appeared to be related to dehydration and a medication issue. They were adjusting her prescription and wanted to observe her overnight.
Relief washed over me so suddenly that I nearly cried.
Mom looked at my face.
“Kylie, why do you look like you’ve just seen a ghost?”
“Long flight.”
“Try again.”
I sat beside her bed and took her hand.
For several minutes, I couldn’t find the words.
Then I told her everything.
I told her about the airplane, the kissing, Ryan’s excuses, and Megan’s expression when she realized I’d seen them.
Mom listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she squeezed my fingers.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
That was all it took.
I started crying.
Not pretty, quiet crying, either. I cried so hard that I had to cover my face with both hands.
