He touched the stone.
“But I found your little girl.”
I knelt beside him.
For the first time in my life, I had a place where I could speak to the mother I had lost before I was old enough to remember her.
I told her about my childhood with Helen and Thomas. I told her about the life I had built, the mistakes I had made, and the family I had raised.
I told her that I had missed her without knowing I was missing her.
And I promised that I would not allow the years separating us to erase her from my life.
Before we left, Richard placed one final white rose on the grave.
Then he whispered something I barely heard.
“I found her, Catherine. I finally found her.”
The months that followed were not perfect.
Real life did not suddenly become a fairy tale because a DNA test had confirmed my identity.
