“Why those clothes?”
“I am not authorized to explain. Mr. Harrison will answer your questions personally.”
I should have hung up.

Everything about the offer sounded strange. No reasonable person paid a stranger fifty thousand dollars to spend four hours in a mansion, especially when the invitation came with a dress code and a restriction on leaving.
But desperation has a way of making unreasonable things seem possible.
I asked for proof that the money was real. The representative sent me documents bearing the name of Harrison Holdings, along with the address of a private law firm. I checked the information as carefully as I could. Richard Harrison was real, and he was considerably wealthier than I had imagined.
I called the law firm listed on the documents and confirmed that an arrangement had been prepared.
The lawyer would not tell me the reason for it.
He simply said, “Mr. Harrison has been waiting a very long time for this evening. If you decide to accept, please understand that you are free to withdraw from the arrangement at any time.”
