“The door is unlocked. You may leave whenever you wish. But before you decide, please let me show you one thing.”
He walked to the bed and turned the old photograph over.
I saw a young woman standing in a garden, holding the hand of a little girl.
The woman wore a pink blouse, a black skirt, and red high heels.
The little girl was barefoot.
She held a brown stuffed rabbit with one missing eye.
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
I had seen that rabbit before.
Not in a photograph.
In my memories.
Or what I had always assumed were memories.
I reached for the necklace around my neck, a small gold locket my adoptive mother had given me when I was a child.
Richard noticed the movement.
His hands began to tremble.
“Where did you get that necklace?”
“My mother told me it was mine when she found me.”
