The door opened.
Ryan stood there with two men behind him.
He smiled.
“You really should have stayed on the plane.”
I stepped backward.
Noah stood between us.
Ryan looked at Lily.
“There she is.”
“Stay away from her,” I said.
Ryan laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Understand what?”
“She was never supposed to be your child.”
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan looked at Noah.
“Tell her.”
Noah said nothing.
Ryan smiled.
“Your husband isn’t the father.”
I stared at him.
“You are.”
Ryan shook his head.
“No.”
Then he pointed at Noah.
“He is.”
Silence.
I looked at Noah.
His face had gone completely pale.
“What?”
Ryan continued.
“Your husband was paid to keep you away from the truth.”
Noah whispered:
“Ryan…”
“You thought the woman you married chose you by accident?”
I couldn’t breathe.
Ryan smiled.
“She was selected.”
“Why?”
“Because her DNA matched the original research.”
I looked down at Lily.
Everything I believed about my life was collapsing.
Ryan took one step forward.
“Give me the child.”
“No.”
Noah moved in front of us.
Ryan sighed.
“You really don’t remember, do you?”
Noah frowned.
“Remember what?”
“Your father didn’t die.”
Noah froze.
Ryan pulled out his phone.
He showed us a live video.
An older man was sitting in a dark room.
Noah stared at the screen.
His lips parted.
“Dad…”
The man looked directly into the camera.
Then he said:
“Noah, if you’re seeing this, Ryan has found you.”
A pause.
“And the woman with you…”
His eyes moved toward me.
“…is the reason I disappeared.”
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Noah turned toward me.
And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
“Your life,” he whispered, “was built around a secret my father spent twelve years trying to bury.”
And somewhere outside the hospital, a car engine started.
Ryan smiled.
“The real story begins now.”
