“Undo what?” Ashley demanded.
Daniel stood and turned to face her.
“Our marriage.”
Ashley laughed. It was a small, cracked, disbelieving sound. “You’re joking.”
“I’m not.”
“Oh, my God. You’re going to ruin our wedding over a cake?”
“It’s going to be a mess to undo this.”
“No, Ashley.” His voice was calm and tired and absolutely certain. “The cake was never the problem.”
“This is your sister!” She jabbed a finger at me. “She manipulated you! She set this whole thing up, and you can’t possibly mean it!”
“She didn’t make this decision for me. You did. With your own words.” He shook his head slowly. “I can’t build a life with someone who treats a vulnerable person in my family with that kind of contempt. I just can’t.”
“Too late! We’re legally married!”
“The cake was never the problem.”
