I didn’t mention my marriage.
I simply told the truth.
Two days later, Kai called me six times.
I finally answered.
“What did you tell them?”
“The truth.”
“You’ve destroyed my promotion!”
“No, Kai. I documented my work.”
“You could have spoken to me first!”
I let out a slow breath.
“I did speak to you. I helped you for six weekends. I trusted you with my work. And you took credit for it.”
“That was different!”
“How?”
He didn’t answer.
Then he said, “You’re doing this because of Molly.”
I stared out the window.
“No. I’m doing this because my name belongs on my work.”
“You’ve always wanted to beat me!”
I laughed sadly.
“I spent my whole life trying to earn your respect. I don’t need to beat you anymore.”
He went silent.
Then I added, “And for the record, I never told your company anything about Molly. You managed to create this mess without my help.”
