I stared at her.
“Did I tell him that?”
“No.”
“Did I tell you that?”
She lowered her gaze.
“No.”
“Then why are we discussing my marriage as if Kai is the person who gets to explain it?”
Dad pulled out a chair.
“You’re right.”
I sat down.
For a few minutes, nobody spoke.
Then I asked, “Do you remember my twenty-seventh birthday?”
Dad frowned.
“The cake?”
“Yes. The cake.”
Mom covered her face.
“We apologized for that.”
“I know. You sent me a gift card.”
She nodded.
“I brought a chocolate cake that night. I put it in your refrigerator while everyone celebrated Kai. Three hours later, I took it home unopened.”
Dad sat down opposite me.
“Why didn’t you tell us how much that hurt you?”
I stared at him.
“I did tell you. You were standing in the living room when I said it was my birthday.”
