His expression hardened.
Molly began crying harder.
Kai looked away first.
Then he muttered, “Mom and Dad won’t even let us stay at the lake house.”
I stared at him.
“That’s what you’re upset about?”
“They told us to leave after dinner!”
“Did they?”
“They said they weren’t celebrating our relationship under their roof.”
I nodded.
“Well, that sounds like their decision.”
Kai stepped toward me.
“You have to fix this.”
I looked at him in disbelief.
“Excuse me?”
“You need to tell them we’re not bad people. You need to explain that you and Molly were having problems.”
I leaned forward slightly.
“Kai, let me make sure I understand. You betrayed me, and now you’d like me to write the apology for you?”
He said nothing.
Molly reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
“Please don’t.”
She froze.
“Kevin, I love you.”
For a moment, the room went completely still.
