He looked perfectly relaxed.
“Need a hand with anything?”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“Good man.”
He opened the bottle.
“By the way, you got the chocolates?”
I pointed toward the counter.
He grabbed them and grinned.
“You’re a lifesaver.”
I wanted to ask whether he’d also like me to prepare a romantic dinner for him and my wife.
Instead, I said, “Anything for family.”
For the first time in my life, I understood how dangerous those words could be.
The Announcement Nobody Expected
That evening, Kai was practically glowing.
He poured wine for our parents and tapped his glass with a fork.
“I have some exciting news,” he announced.
Mom immediately leaned forward.
“Are you getting the promotion?”
Kai smiled mysteriously.
“That’s part of it.”
Dad raised his glass.
“Then we’d better celebrate!”
Kai shook his head.
“Tomorrow night. I want everyone together. It’s personal news, and I want to make a proper announcement.”
