The house was quiet when I walked in.
I carried two grocery bags into the kitchen and heard laughter upstairs.
Molly’s laughter.
Not her polite laugh or the one she used when my father repeated a story she’d already heard four times.
It was the warm, unguarded laugh I had always loved.
I smiled automatically.
Then I heard Kai.
“Does he suspect anything?”
I stopped moving.
Molly answered with a soft laugh.
“Kevin? Are you kidding? He trusts both of us.”
For a moment, my brain refused to understand the words.
I stood at the bottom of the stairs with a bag cutting into my fingers.
Kai said something too quietly for me to hear.
Then Molly laughed again.
“Stop. You’re going to make me laugh.”
A door opened.
I looked up.
Molly stepped into the hallway.
She was wearing the pale blue sweater I’d bought her for our anniversary. Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders.
