I was standing three feet away holding two suitcases and a bag of groceries.
Molly kissed me.
“Don’t worry,” she whispered. “I’ll promote you to chief suitcase officer.”
“What’s the salary?”
“Unlimited affection.”
“Benefits?”
She kissed my cheek.
“Negotiable.”
I smiled.
She winked.
For the first time that day, I forgot about Kai.
That evening, we played cards after dinner.
Kai accused me of cheating.
I stared at him.
“You literally have a card sticking out of your sleeve.”
He looked down.
Then he calmly pushed it farther up.
“Evidence is important in these situations.”
Molly laughed so hard she dropped her cards.
“Kevin, please. Let him win. If he loses at cards, he’ll have to update his résumé.”
“Very funny,” Kai said.
Dad chuckled.
“That’s enough, you two.”
Kai grinned at me.
“See? Dad knows who the favorite is.”
“Yes,” I replied. “The favorite is the person who doesn’t have to cheat at Go Fish.”
