“I’m sorry. I wouldn’t call if it weren’t important.”
“What happened?”
“I wanted to ask you about a woman named Tessa.”
The silence was immediate.
“What about her?”
“She came to my office today and claimed she’s pregnant with Roy’s baby.”
Margaret exhaled.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake. Tessa wouldn’t lie to me.”
The certainty in her voice startled me.
“You believe her?”
“I believe what I know about her. She’s been more helpful to me in a few weeks than certain members of this family have been in years.”
I gripped the edge of the counter.
“Margaret, Roy has denied knowing her. I’ve seen the messages.”
“Then perhaps you should ask yourself why another woman thinks she has a claim on your husband.”
“That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.”
“Don’t take that tone with me, Vanessa.”
I closed my eyes.
“I am not attacking you. I’m concerned that someone may be taking advantage of you.”
