I am not the father of your child.
If you continue harassing me, I will report it.
Tessa had sent dozens of messages. Roy had answered only a handful.
That was encouraging, but I wasn’t ready to declare him innocent. A few denials on a phone screen could not explain how she knew his name, his workplace, and the details of his family.
Then I noticed something else.
Tessa had repeatedly mentioned Margaret, Roy’s mother.
I opened their conversation.
Margaret had been sending Roy messages about Tessa for weeks.
Tessa came by today and brought groceries.
She helped me fix the loose gutter.
She stayed for tea. Such a lovely girl.
Then, a few days later:
I wish you would make time for your mother the way Tessa does.
And finally:
At least somebody remembers that I’m getting older.
I read that last message twice.
Margaret had never particularly liked me. From the beginning of our marriage, she had treated me as though I had stolen something that belonged to her.
