I didn’t answer immediately.
She sent another message.
Roy is not the father of my baby. He never was. Margaret knew that from the beginning.
I read the words twice.
Then she called.
I answered with the recording app ready.
“I know you have every reason to hate me,” Tessa said. Her voice sounded different now—smaller, exhausted.
“I don’t know you well enough to hate you. I know what you did. Why did you agree to it?”
She hesitated.
“Margaret told me that Roy was miserable in his marriage. She said he stayed with you out of obligation and that if you left, he’d finally have the courage to start over.”
“And you believed her?”
“At first, I thought she just wanted somebody to talk to. She was generous with me. She helped with my rent when I was struggling. Then she started talking about how you had taken her son away.”
