A GUY ASKED ME TO DANCE AT PROM WHEN NO ONE ELSE WANTED TO BECAUSE OF THE SCARS ON MY FACE — THE NEXT MORNING, HIS PARENTS SHOWED UP AT MY HOUSE WITH THE POLICE.

I smiled sadly.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every time I looked at you, I remembered what happened.”

I nodded.

“I understand.”

He swallowed.

“I thought if I stayed away from you, you’d never have to know.”

“But you came to prom.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He smiled faintly.

“Because I finally realized staying away wasn’t protecting you.”

I looked at him.

“It was protecting me.”

He nodded.

The investigation continued for months.

Ryan was arrested.

The old case was reopened.

Evidence that had been overlooked years earlier was tested again.

Caleb testified.

My mother testified.

I testified.

And eventually, the truth about that night finally became part of the official record.

It didn’t erase my scars.

It didn’t give me my childhood back.

It didn’t undo the surgeries.

But it gave me something I had never had.

An explanation.

Years later, I still remembered that prom.

Not because Caleb was the football star.

Not because everyone stared.

Not because it was the night the police came to my house.

I remembered it because it was the first night I stopped hiding.

I stopped covering my face when people looked.

I stopped wondering whether someone would think I was beautiful.
