THE DISCOVERY
A month later, disaster struck.
A section of the coffee-processing mill collapsed.
The workers shouted and ran.
A huge wooden beam had cracked.
If it fell completely, it could destroy the entire structure.
Joaquim arrived and immediately understood the danger.
“Everyone out!”
But before they could move, Benedita stepped forward.
She looked at the beam.
Then at the roof.
Then at the supports.
“Don’t move it.”
Joaquim stared at her.
“What?”
“If you move it, the roof comes down.”
“How do you know?”
“Because the weight has shifted.”
She pointed upward.
“We need to support this side first.”
Joaquim hesitated.
Then trusted her.
They followed her instructions.
Benedita climbed onto the wooden structure.
The workers shouted.
“Get down!”
But she kept going.
She reached the damaged section.
She placed her hands against the beam.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then she shouted:
“Now!”
Three men pushed the support into position.
The beam shifted.
The entire building groaned.
Everyone froze.
Then the structure settled.
The mill remained standing.
Joaquim looked at Benedita.
She climbed down covered in dust.
“You saved it,” he said.
She shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“I showed you where it was breaking.”
Joaquim smiled.
“And that saved us.”
