He had spent years signing contracts that involved hundreds of millions of dollars.
Yet as he stood beneath a flickering light, measuring formula for a hungry baby, he felt more certain about what he was doing than he had during most of the evening’s business discussions.
When he handed Clara the bottle, she took it with both hands.
“Here,” he said gently. “Let’s get her fed.”
Clara sat down and lifted Lily into her arms.
The moment the nipple touched the baby’s lips, she began drinking eagerly.
Her cries stopped.
The silence that followed was so sudden that Clara could hear the faint ticking of the clock above the kitchen door.
She looked down at her daughter.
Lily’s tiny fingers curled around the bottle. Her eyelids fluttered, and the tension gradually left her little face.
Clara pressed her lips together.
Then she began to cry.
Not loudly.
